Niagara Falls, Canada, October 15 - 18, 2018
The 2018 Colloquium entitled Satellite for 5G will be held prior to the Joint Conference on Monday, October 15, 2018
The Colloquium is organized by the Co-Chairs:
Antonio Franchi works at the European Space Agency, he is the Head of Future Programs Acquisition, part of the Telecommunications & Integrated Applications Directorate. His current interests are in Satellite 5G and in Satellite Megaconstellations.
He has 28 years of experience in the satellite telecommunications industry. Prior to ESA, Antonio worked for over 20 years with a major global satellite operator, spearheading a new generation of satellite communications systems, covering various technical and managerial responsibilities for design, development, implementation and operation of advanced satellite systems and networks.
He received an MSc in Electronic Engineering from the University of Rome and an MBA from the London Business School.
He is author of 30+ articles and papers published at international conferences and professional magazines and he holds five international patents in the satcom field.
As Acting Bid and Payload Systems Manager at MDA Montreal, Jean-Luc Agostini has more than twelve years of industry experience in system design, spacecraft payload design, and management.
Since joining MDA eight years ago, he has worked in progressively senior positions as a Payload System Designer, and a Payload System Lead prior to his current assignment.
Before joining MDA, he worked for high-technologies companies in France, including Thales Alenia Space, Entares Engineering, and the Alcen Group.
He obtained his MSc (Hons) in Wireless Networks from Queen Mary University of London in 2005. He obtained a BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering
from the University of Greenwich, and a degree (DUT GTR) in Telecommunications and Networks from the Université de Nice.
Key industry players will debate the role of satellites in 5G and present upcoming system architectures.
With billions of devices connected to the Internet by 2020 all requiring constant connectivity, the wireless industry has a big
job to do. 5G is a revolution in telecommunications; challenging space technologies, defining new sets of services, and fashioning network of networks. Satellite will
complement 5G terrestrial systems and offer important societal and economic benefits.
At the same time, the space communication ecosystem is becoming the center of attention of new investors. Many Satcom constellation projects, both GEO and non-GEO,
from both incumbent operators and new players are being proposed and implemented to respond to the global demand for data. The colloquium
will look across a broad range of satellite systems and their role in delivering integrated 5G services and address how satellite and
terrestrial 5G systems will interoperate.
Panelists from the Satellite and Cellular industry, GEO and non-GEO Satcom operators, prime manufacturers and suppliers,
will be invited to discuss their approaches to deliver integrated 5G services, their architectures and their visions, in interactive sessions.
Barry and Yogaratnam will provide a review of 3GPP 5G release 15 and 16 for terrestrial systems and foreseen adaption for satellites.
S1-2 - Introduction to ESA 5G initiative with Antonio Franchi at European Space AgencyAntonio will give an overview of the ESA Satellite for 5G initiative, which is helping industry in delivering integrated terrestrial/satellite 5G solutions to support the digitalization of business and society.
Dr Wen Tong will depict 5G use cases addressing enhanced mobile broadband, machine communications and ultra-reliable and secure communication.
S2-2 - Satellite use cases and solutions for 5G with Dr. Konstantinos Liolis from SESKonstantinos will present the most promising satellite use cases for 5G with focus on eMBB and mMTC usage scenarios. The presentation will also address GEO/MEO satellite solutions for 5G roll-out.
S2-3 - Satellite Constellations and 5G Services from OneWeb with Vikas Grover at OneWebThe role of satellite constellation in delivering global 5G services.
S2-4 - 5G MNO with Ivo Maljevic from TelusIvo will depict 5G network rollout strategies. With an emphasis on how 5G devices can work on networks that are mostly based on the same infrastructure as 4G LTE networks and how the network will be moving toward radios and cores designed for 5G.
S2-5 - 5G in Japan with Naoto Kadowaki from NICTNaoto will give us insights on the Japanese 5G on going demonstrations as well as International cooperation status.
5G will change the way networks are built and operated and will require new functional elements to manage complexity and scale. Operators will discuss the steps undertaken to prepare for the integration of these changes.
Panelist 1: I. Maljevic - Telus5G requires new equipment and technology to accommodate the user requirements and multiple use cases.
Panelist will be invited to present their technology road maps in delivering network and user equipment fulfilling the demanding 5G needs in terms of size, flexibility and always lower capex.
